Selection Considerations — Crawler vs. Wheeled Excavator

Procurement teams weighing undercarriage type should treat the choice as a duty-cycle trade-off, not a brand preference. Both platforms remain valid when matched to terrain, transport logistics and dig depth.

Crawler excavator

Lower ground pressure (typically 28–46 kPa on mid-class rubber or triple-grouser shoes) suits soft shoulders, spoil piles and deep footing digs. Stability under breakout force and high dig depth favors crawler undercarriages on most utility and foundation packages. Trade-off: road travel usually needs a trailer or float, raising mobilization cost between distant sites.

Wheeled excavator

Self-propelled road travel cuts float rental on urban multi-site packages and short municipal runs. Operating cost can drop when crews change blocks several times per shift. Trade-off: higher ground pressure and less flotation on soft fills; deep dig and heavy breaker duty still favor crawler stability and track contact area.

Yanmar application notes recommend logging soil CBR or cone index, dig-depth stakes and daily move distance before locking the undercarriage SKU in a tender response.

Operating Boundaries & Known Limitations

Transparent limits reduce mis-spec risk. Compact excavator packages are not universal earthmoving substitutes.
